Concluded in May 2023, the assignment assessed available energy storage technologies, evaluated the role of energy storage in the current grid conditions, identified potential storage locations, analysed energy storage requirements under variable renewable energy (VRE) integration, and developed a roadmap for energy storage in Bangladesh.
The roadmap highlights specific use-cases for consideration in the Bangladesh power sector over three different future time horizons. It also includes a summary of indicative policy and regulation actions and interventions that may be considered to enable the deployment of energy storage within the defined time horizons.
We have considered the economic value and the environmental value of the energy supply to estimate the prospective primary energy mix of Bangladesh for electricity generation. Our estimation suggests for the use of 25% Coal, 25% Natural Gas, and 35% Renewable Energies that ensure the best energy mix of Bangladesh.
From the above-discussion on the existing national and international energy scenarios, it can be concluded that the power sector of Bangladesh faces a strong challenge for ensuring its future energy demand primarily because of the reserve of fossil fuel, which may be depleted in the next decade.
4. Structure of electric power sector of Bangladesh The electricity market of Bangladesh is primarily regulated by the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) under the guidance of the Ministry of Power, Energy & Mineral Resources (MoPEMR) of Bangladesh. The MoPEMR has two wings: Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) and Power Cell.
At present, the power generation capacity of Bangladesh is around 18,753 MW . The estimated Electricity generation in KWh per capita is 433 kWh, which is still lower compared to the developed countries in the world [4, 6]. Electricity generation in Bangladesh largely depends on fossil fuels as compared to all other energy fuels.

In order to build a sustainable energy supply system, initiatives have been taken to reduce energy consumption, that is to say, make efficiency gains, of upto 20% by 2030.
