Microsoft has previously deployed a lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) and a grid-interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) at one of its Dublin data centers in partnership with Vertiv and Enel X, saying the project can be rolled out globally.
A BESS stores energy from the utility grid and/or renewable energy sources, and supplies energy either back to the grid or to a load. It can be optimized depending on financial, sustainability, and/or resiliency requirements. Each BESS is distributed energy resource (DERs). It’s an electrochemical device.
Two BESS projects are already in the pipeline, with a combined capacity of 8 MWh slated for Ireland and Scotland. These projects are expected to enhance energy resilience and support the integration of more renewable energy into the grid.
More currently, according to our colleagues at Solar Media Market Research, which produces the , there are now 545MW and 609MWh of utility-scale BESS projects already operational in the Republic of Ireland. The development pipeline stands at 6.3GW, while 4.7GW of projects in planning have been approved.
In short, battery storage plants, or battery energy storage systems (BESS), are a way to stockpile energy from renewable sources and release it when needed.
Navigating regulatory landscapes can pose a considerable challenge for BESS projects. As BESS is a relatively new technology, regulations and standards are currently diverse and evolving at local, national, and international levels. There is currently not the same body of knowledge available that exists for more established installation types.
In Scotland and Northern Ireland, BESSs require consent from either ministers or the planning authority depending on their storage capacity. Depending on its capacity, a BESS may also require a generating licence to operate. Generating licences are issued by Ofgem in Great Britain or by the Utility Regulator in Northern Ireland.
