Carlton Power, the UK energy infrastructure development company, is pleased to announce that Highview Power’s £300m liquid air energy storage (LAES) project will be the first energy scheme to be built on its Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park, at Carrington, eight miles south of Manchester.

The company has had a smaller-scale 5MW/15MWh project operational, also in Manchester, since 2018. It first revealed plans for a large-scale project in Carrington in 2019 which the then-CEO told Energy-Storage.news would start construction the following year.
Planning permission for the battery-storage facility was granted by Trafford Council. The council’s leader, Tom Ross, said that the battery storage and green-hydrogen schemes would put Trafford and Greater Manchester “at the forefront of the UK’s energy transition”.

Planning permission for the BESS was granted by Trafford Council, the local planning authority. Subject to a final investment decision, construction of the battery storage scheme is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year (2024) with it entering commercial operation in the final quarter of 2025.
